This is a substantial painting of the send-off of paper lanterns (lumineers) into the night. For many people and cultures, the paper lantern send-off can be celebratory or akin to expressing sorrow. I often find it interesting how important ceremony can be to people, how collectively performing an act can give us a sense of community and connection. I once heard a quote that, when I was younger, seemed silly, but now I begin to feel is more and more true: funerals are not for the dead, they are for the living. As intelligent and sophisticated as we have become, ceremony remains important in terms of being able to grasp life events.
